If you have a green home or office and are looking to furnish it with some green contemporary furniture, check out Knu. I usually don't do posts on furniture but Knu caught my attention. They are an on-line gig that will be live September 1, 2007 for orders. Their desks and chairs have a cool, clean design that is pretty refreshing. I wish I had that entertainment unit (pic below)! A lot of this stuff is hand made, which is reflected in the price tag. But it is definitely built for the long-term, so quality isn't an issue. Knu's products (designed by Bradford Davis) are made from harvested wood, assembled with 40% recycled post-consumer waste stainless steel hardware and they manufacture their products in an energy efficient, 100% carbon neutral manufacturing facility.
Knu is the brainchild of Industrial Woodworking Corporation. These guys are very serious about sustainability and environmental responsibility. Not only have they created Knu, which is entirely green and sustainable (apparently Knu's website is even powered by the wind!), but they have taken steps to offset 100% of their emissions, through Carbonfund.org, the country's leading carbon reduction and offset organization. Industrial Woodworking Corporation uses energy efficient processes to reduce the overall energy it needs and whatever energy it does have to use, they make sure that energy comes from renewable domestic sources such as wind, solar and geothermal. They are doing some good things. I am really impressed with Knu's furniture. If you are looking for a catalog or mailer, forget it. Knu is exclusively on-line...saving trees in the process.
